Setting your child on the right path academically, socially and morally, is at the heart of what we seek to achieve in our early years education. Our staff are passionate about helping every child to succeed and grow in a happy and nurturing atmosphere. We know that a happy child who feels safe and confident in their environment, will be more engaged and interested in their school work and their hobbies. Our classes are small and our emphasis is on active hands-on learning.
From Nursery upwards your child will enjoy a vibrant and broad curriculum, including languages, music, IT, sport and swimming, all taught by subject specialists.
Reading and writing are the corner stones of education, and each individual is encouraged to work at their own level and reach for the next step.
Maths skills are also crucial building blocks in the early years, and we use a range of techniques and games, from nursery upwards, to develop number confidence and mental arithmetic skills.
From Reception to Year 2, we have a topic-based approach to learning for Science, History and Geography, enabling children to explore deeply into a particular theme. Each term begins with a big launch of the topic and ends with a celebration of learning. Through the term we have mixed-age theme days in which children enjoy a carousel of linked activities as well as going on trips as appropriate. Where possible, other subjects also link to the topic.
Languages start in Nursery, where we aim to familiarise the children with French, using songs, stories and games to capture their imagination. Pre-Prep French follows the termly topics, and is taught using a communicative approach, to maximise oral fluency and aural understanding. Children in French lessons are encouraged to talk in French as much as possible, and vocabulary from the lessons is reinforced by class teachers throughout the day.
Sport is an important part of Prep life, and all the Pre-Prep children take part in some form of physical activity every day, such as aerobics, gymnastics, tennis, hockey, netball, rounders, football, tag rugby and athletics. In addition there are a number of lunchtime clubs to supplement the class activities, and children can enjoy dance and ballet, golf and tennis coaching.
Music is also a central element of Pre-Prep life, and our music specialists introduce the children to music theory and composition. In addition there are numerous music clubs, including choir, strings group, recorder club, and your child can also have individual tuition on a wide range of instruments.
Life skills are vital elements of a holistic education, and we aim to instil a strong moral compass, good manners and an awareness of others in all that we do. Perhaps most importantly, school and learning should be fun and here at Sherborne Prep the children learn from the outset that "schoolwork" and "fun" can be synonymous!
Extra-curricular clubs are offered in addition to the broad and exciting curriculum. There are plenty of clubs both at lunch times and after school between 3.45pm and 5pm. An example of our clubs is available here.
