Wonderful cricket to open the season

CRICKET

1st XI v Millfield

The first real match of the season brought with it a range of emotions. Sherborne batted first and initially enjoyed a solid opening stand between Harry and Nic. Nic went on to construct an excellent 50, which included wonderful timing and shot selection. Unfortunately after the opening stance, no partnerships of note were put together, seeing us loose wickets at regular intervals with no one giving themselves a chance to settle in with the bat. In a low scoring match we had to bowl tightly and started well with an effective opening partnership between Matt L and Tom H, pegging the hosts to 12-2. However, despite a very teasing spell of leg spin from Charlie we let a promising position slip. Some wonderful cricket played and plenty learnt; looking forward to the rest of the season.

2nd XI v Millfield

Match type: 20 overs
Weather - overcast with slight drizzle.
Millfield won the toss and elected to bat.

Millfield 93 runs scored in 20 overs
Prep - 53 runs scored in 20 overs

The team feels a little bit disappointed as we did not challenge in the game perhaps as we deserved. We were very hesitant in our approach. We gave the opening pair of batsmen too much wayward bowling which gave them a lot of runs! By the time we settled and bowled on the off stump with a good length, wickets started to fall. Our batting was also reserved. It took Joaquin P at number 7 to play any positive shot scoring shots. We hope to be a little bit more adventurous and youthful in our next game.

Colts A v All Hallows

This was the first time the boys had played on grass this year and predictably the pitch was very slow. It took some time to adjust but in the end, against a very weakened bowling attack, we scored 163 off 25 overs. The boys then bowled out the opposition for 32. A great start albeit against a much weakened All Hallows side.

Colts B v All Hallows

Batting first, the opening pair of Harry Mac and Felix B faced some hostile and accurate bowling. Harry pushed the first ball past mid on for a single then Felix got a ball that bounced as he played forward and clipped his off bail. In the next over, having added a single, movement off the seam saw Matthew D bowled. Marcus B for a single and James K first ball fell to the opening bowler. Harry fell off the final ball of the next over to a fine catch as he tried to assert himself and the team found themselves five down with only seven on the board. Daniel M put up some resistance aided by Rory G until Rory missed a straight one: 10-6. Daniel and Billy George M refused to give up, putting on 30, before Billy was bowled. Daniel and Harry W took the score to 50 before Harry gave a return catch. Daniel, top scorer with 12, was bowled by a straight ball from the returning opening bowler, with Aaron PS the last to go. With a low total to defend this would be a tall order. Harry W found some grip in the pitch and Felix took a good catch down the leg side. Other chances fell short before Billy bowled the other opener. Some lusty hitting by the number three saw All Hallows home. The loss of early wickets and an outstanding individual performance from one of our opposition made this a match that was hard to win from the outset but the team maintained composure and a positive attitude from the start.

Colts C v All Hallows

Sherborne Won 368 - 297

A great start to the cricket term with our Colts C team winning against All Hallows' under 10 Bs. The boys, many of who have just started playing the sport, made every effort during the match and the high number of 4s were great to see from our batsmen. There are promising bowlers, such as new student Wilf, and the game was a fantastic opportunity to assess pupils strengths for future training. Man of the match has to go to committed captain, Christian, but well done to all the boys.
