Wednesday's Match Results

1st XI Hockey v All Hallows

After a brief interlude for illness the boys came up against a very powerful 7 a side team in All Hallows. We played 2 teams and the Coach tried to get both standards the same. The A team, superbly led by Nick, were soundly beaten by a better team but they improved immeasurably as the game went on. The B team had an end to end battle with their All Hallows counterparts. Patrick put SPS two up in the 1st quarter before All Hallows came back strong and took the lead. In the last 2 minutes however Patrick and then Tom P scored a brilliant solo effort to equalize and make the score 5 - 5. Thomas B was voted player of the match.

Final Score draw 5-5

2nd XI v All Hallows

Won 3-1 - a very encouraging result given both the strength of All Hallows and the fact our captain, Tom C and Travis (a key member of the defence) were both absent with illness. Adam stepped up to the mark very effectively as captain and our attack proved far too strong for All Hallows with Charlie, Adam and Robbie all scoring a goal. Robbie's was the best piece of individual skill on the day - a reverse stick flick over the advancing keeper. Henry B proved steadfast in defence and All Hallows only goal came when he made an excellent save, only for our defence to be a little too slow in clearing away the rebound before All Hallows got there. Teamwork was excellent, passing skills improved and once we learn how to convert a penalty flick the team should score even more goals. The whole team worked their socks off. Well done!

Final Score - Win 3-1

3rd Team v Sunninghill 1sts

The 3rd team began their season with a well fought performance against Sunninghill. The game started with Sunninghill pressing from the outset but Sherborne matched their attacks with some solid defensive work and good saves from goalkeeper Artem.

As the half progressed both teams created chances, but it was the visitors who eventually took control and broke the deadlock. This didn't stop Sherborne from immediately hitting their opponents on the counter attack and if it wasn't for an outstanding save, we might have equalised straight from the centre. Unfortunately, Sunninghill then took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break with the last hit of the half.

The second half didn't start well and Sunninghill doubled their advantage within two-minutes leaving the score at 4-0. With a whitewash on the cards, Sherborne dug their heels and produced some good moves to cut through the Sunninghill defence. They eventually got what they deserved, when a run down the right hand side led to a cross that was swiftly converted by Jake. Although the final score was 4-1 to Sunninghill, there were certainly some positives to take from the game. The team improved in the second half and showed promising signs of good team work. Joint man of the match Toby S was a constant threat on the right hand side of midfield and fellow man of the match Artem produced some outstanding saves to keep Sherborne in the match.

Final score - Lost 4-1

U11A v Sunninghill

A fantastic all-round team performance from the U11A's with contributions across the field (except for Edward in goal, who, thanks to good defending didn't touch the ball). It took SPS time to settle into the match, with the first half being scrappy at times and playing a narrow game, meaning half time was met with only a one goal advantage.

However, oranges at half time did the trick. During the second half the lads were moving off the ball well and looking to pass into the space. Sunninghill couldn't live with the speed of passing and use of space and SPS ran out convincing winners. Harry picked up man of the match for his consistency on the right, Nick adapted very well to the left midfield position and Tom D at the back hounded opposition forwards like a terrier, never giving them space. Tougher challenges may lie ahead, but with continued commitment and thinking about their game the U11's should enjoy many more good games.

Final score - Won 6-0

1st VII Netball v Knighton House

In cold and damp conditions, Sherborne 1st VII hosted their first home netball fixture of the season, with a visit from Knighton House School. The team began well, with some swift passes and neat dodges allowing them to feed the ball into the shooters. Emily wasted no time and gave an impressive display of shooting throughout the match, with her success rate close to 90%. The score after the first quarter was a comfortable 5- 0 lead. Some impressive interceptions from Beth, and turnovers in our defending circle from Nora, India and Annabel gave Sherborne a clear lead of 11-0 at half time. Although there were some passages of play that showed Sherborne giving away loose passes, overall the squad performed well and were in control throughout the match. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but a final score of 17 - 2 was a very pleasing start to the season. Well done to all involved.

Final score - Won 17-2

Coach - Sara Guy

U8 & U9 netball v Port Regis

The Under 8 and Under 9 girls had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at Port Regis to start their netball season. They played High Five netball which enables all girls to rotate and play every position in a set order.

The U8s played a very evenly matched game, showing lots of potential from all of them in every position they played and showed that they are learning where all the different position are allowed on court. Lily, Hannah & Willow were especially good at intercepting passes. Well played to everyone.

Final score - Lost 6-0

The U9s showed a dominance to their game with good spacing on the court, thought in passing, great appliance of the footwork rule and an all round team effort regardless of which combination of players were on court. Everyone played beyond all expectations and they have a great basis to build on for the rest of the term excellent play to all.

Final score - Won 6-1
