Pupils from Year 4 enjoyed a Bee Happy workshop, making homes for bees which they have mounted on the wall above our greenhouses. The children also took their own bee homes home with them, making a safe and happy environment for bees to flourish. I really liked making the bee boxes. We made them out of bamboo sticks, bits of logs with holes in them and pine cones. We glued them to the bottom of the boxes and had to use up all of the space - Constance These are little homes for solitary bees - Alexander In my bee box I put 54 bamboo sticks, three pine cones and three little logs - Finn The bee expert told us to put the glue on the bottom of the thing we were sticking, not in the bee box! - Declan Everyone was very excited. I think it was fun and we should do it again! - Molly |

Sherborne Preppers Rescue Hedgehog |
|

A hedgehog was found tangled up in our hockey nets and was rescued by teacher Rosie Labuschagne. Rosie took the hedgehog home, where he was revived in the warmth of her kitchen. She brought him back into school with her the following day, when he was looked after by the school office staff. He has been taken to a rescue centre in Dorchester, where he has made a full recovery and will be released back into the Dorset countryside. |

Sherborne Prep Eco Meeting was well attended by the pupils of both the Prep and Pre-Prep, along with representatives from the parent body and staff. All the children take their specific responsiblities very seriously and came up with some great new ideas to take the Eco School into 2010. After the meeting Dominique-Lea took an old pumpkin to the school's compost heap. |

Our School is an Eco-School The Eco-Schools Programme aims to promote environmentally aware schools throughout the UK. It is a chance for pupils to make a difference. Our school was recently awarded the Green Flag, which is the highest award for promoting care for the environment. It is important that the whole school family is fully involved in keeping up the momentum to retain the Green Flag. At a recent meeting of the Eco-Committee the following aims were suggested: - Stop using throw-away plastic spoons at lunch time
- More green bins around the school
- Compost heap guardians
- Plant more trees
- More eco-visits for classes
- Wild flower patch
- Save apple pips to plant
- A green roof on one of the classrooms
At the time of writing, the first aim has already been met and the compost heap guardians have their own pair of heavy duty gloves. The senior children are investigating ideas for a green roof on the internet. We are planning a visit to a school that already has a green roof on a fact finding mission. If you have any comments or ideas about our eco-school please get in touch with any of the School Council, our eco-team, or Mrs Suttle. |
